Meet Ducky: The Dog Who Maps the World by Memory
May 07, 2026
There are dogs who can't see the world… And there are dogs who run at it anyway.
Ducky is both.
Currently being fostered through Fur love Haven, Ducky has spent the last year and a half learning how to be a dog. After being surrendered by a family in California, she came into foster in pain, frightened, and unsure of almost everything. Two patient older "dog brothers" and one steady foster family later, she's a completely different dog.

Today, Ducky is a roughly 2-year-old pitbull mix, 45 pounds, and:
- House trained and crate trained
- Knows sit, lay down, wait, and "in front" (her most useful command)
- Plays fetch indoors — pounces on the ball when she hears it land
- Walks well on leash with a pinch collar
- Comfortable with the Dremel for nail care
- Confident in familiar spaces; navigates new ones with patience
- No separation anxiety
- Bonds deeply with her people
But what truly defines Ducky isn't what she can't see.
It's everything she runs toward anyway.

Ducky is blind in both eyes — one removed for medical reasons after she arrived in foster, the other has never given her sight. She may catch shadows when light is behind an object, but mostly she navigates by memory and sound. She is, as her foster puts it, a Roomba in a new place. A few laps to learn the layout. Then she runs it.
She is deeply people-oriented. Treat-motivated to her core. The second a Ziplock bag opens, she sits down — politely, every single time. She gives a lot of kisses. She sleeps draped across her foster brothers. Her backyard zoomies are elite. Her tug-of-war is, quite frankly, impressive.
She would do best as the only dog, or with a calm, well-matched companion she's been properly introduced to. She's still learning how to meet new dogs, so introductions are kept slow. She has shown some food-related caution in the past — none in over a year — so a thoughtful, predictable feeding routine is ideal.
She thrives with someone who's home a lot. Someone willing to let her map a new space at her own pace. Someone patient enough to wait while she learns where the corners are — and steady enough to be there when she figures it out.

About Fur Love Haven Rescue
Fur Love Haven (FLH) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) foster-based dog rescue serving Oregon and Washington. Founded in 2019 with a simple mission — to be a voice for dogs unwanted for any reason and give them a safe, loving place to land — they have helped more than 200 dogs and cats find their forever homes.
Because FLH is foster-based, every dog in their care is living in a real home, with real people, learning what stability looks like before they ever meet their adopters. Each one receives the veterinary care they need, and every dog adopted through FLH goes home with access to free training to help set them and their family up for success.
Their work goes beyond rescue and adoption. FLH also helps members of their local community cover emergency veterinary expenses — keeping dogs with the families who love them when life gets hard.

Fur Love Haven is the rescue who saw something in Ducky when she needed it most — and the reason she had a foster family ready to teach her how to be a dog. We're grateful for the care, dedication, and heart they pour into every animal who comes through their doors.
